Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799 – 1869), was an English Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In 1857, a contest was held to find a design for the new Foreign Office building. Though he placed second, Prime Minister Derby hired George Gilbert Scott for the job because he loved Scott's Gothic style. Though before Scott could begin, Lord Palmerston was elected Prime Minister.[1] Following Palmerston's resignation in 1858 after failing to defeat charges that his government had harbored assassins who attempted to kill President Napoleon III of France, Derby was elected as Prime Minister; he would later be succeeded in turn by Benjamin Disraeli in 1868.[2]
