Eavesdropping was a virtual representation of one of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's genetic memories, relived by Desmond Miles in 2012 through the Animus.
Description
While gathering information about Tamir, Altaïr spotted three merchants discussing Tamir near the madrasah at the east end of the Poor District of Damascus.
Dialogue
Altaïr took a seat on a nearby bench and listened to the two men's conversation.
- Merchant 1: He's called another meeting.
- Merchant 2: What is it this time? Another warning? Another execution?
- Merchant 3: No. He has work for us to do.
- Merchant 1: Which means we won't be paid.
- Merchant 2: He's abandoned the ways of the merchant guild... does as he pleases now.
- Merchant 1: He treats us as though we were his servants.
- Merchant 3: And the guard does nothing to stop it.
- Merchant 2: Enough. We must go. If we're late, he'll be angry, and we'll suffer for it.
- Merchant 1: Perhaps one day, someone will have the courage to stand up to him.
- Merchant 2: Perhaps... but until that day arrives, we should do as told.
Outcome
Altaïr learned that Tamir is calling a meeting with the merchant guild at the Souk Al-Silaah.
Trivia
- This memory is only present in the console versions of Assassin's Creed and is replaced by Informer Escort in the PC version.
- In Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade, the conversation between the three merchants is the first lead in Altaïr's investigation on Tamir rather than the second, and he finds them closer to—or at—the Souk Al-Silaah. The dialogue is identical to that in the game up until the line "Does as he pleases now," where the book then retracts the rest of the conversation into merely describing it as covering a great deal of content, alongside the explicit mention of the words "the biggest ever". This suggests that their discussion deviates from that in the game beginning at the point the book omits the rest of it. In addition, unlike in the game where the merchants end their talk on their own accord, in the novel, they are interrupted by the threatening gaze of a nearby herald, actually the herald that would be interrogated by Altaïr immediately afterwards but is quite far from the merchants in the game.
