The Eastern Cemetery Mastaba is a cemetery of mastabas located east of the Great Pyramid of Giza, serving as a burial place for some of the family members of the pharaoh Khufu. During the 1st century BCE, the mastaba was inhabited by various Egyptian scavengers and bandits.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 48 BCE, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa saved the scavenger Oba from the clutches of bandits. Back at the scavengers' camp, Bayek met Nebti, another scavenger who was obsessed with a ring like Oba. Bayek was directed by the scavengers to rescue yet another scavenger, Rashidi, who was supposed to have the ring, but who had also been taken by bandits from the Khentkawes Hideout.[2]
Sometime afterwards, Bayek returned to the mastaba with the ring, having recovered it from Turo, one of the scavengers' deceased brethren. Seeing that the surviving scavengers had no thought to spare for their deceased brother, Bayek tossed the ring into the air. It eventually ended falling into the sandy cracks of the ground, causing the scavengers to look for it in vain.[2] Around the same time, Bayek also found one of the Papyrus Puzzles within the mastaba.[3]
