"Dull and Duller" were two 9th-century Norse brothers who aspired to be Vikings. They claimed to be sons of Ragnar Lodbrok and attempted to model themselves after Ivarr the Boneless and Ubba Ragnarsson.
History
At some point during the invasion of the Heptarchy by the Great Heathen Army, the brothers got together to practice raiding. After stashing some of their precious belongings in an abandoned farmstead, they devolved into arguing about setting it on fire, at which the Viking raider Eivor encountered them. Eivor, overhearing their argument, took the initiative to light the building on fire, prompting the two brothers now dubbed "Dull and Duller", to begin their mock raid.[1]
Unfortunately they could not break down the front door and had left the key locked inside, forcing Eivor to find another means of entry. Once Eivor had gained entrance, the brothers shouted locations where they might have left their mother's axe. After finding only the key, Eivor left the house to find that one of the brothers had forgotten that he had removed the axe from the building prior to the raid for safety reasons. Disgusted with the whole event, Eivor left the two brothers to their own devices.[1]
Personalities
The two brothers were dumb, endangering both themselves and their possessions in an ill-advised mock raid. However they were also rather self-assured, easily dismissing Eivor's criticism after the fact.
Behind the scenes
The brothers are named after the 1994 comedy film of a similar name, Dumb and Dumber, which follows two well-meaning yet dumb friends on a road trip from Rhode Island to Colorado in their quest to return a briefcase of ransom money after mistakenly thinking it abandoned by its owner.
