An ink painting of a mother duck leading her flock of ducklings for a swim.
Mandarin ducks are devoted mothers, caring for their babies which hatch in the springtime. The offspring instinctively keep close to their mother, following her every move almost immediately after hatching. The mother duck keeps her ducklings warm and protects them from predators while they develop independence and learn to fly.
