Crossbows are very old weapons, and are present in Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", written between 500BC and 300BC.

It is thought that the Chinese were the first to invent the repeating crossbow. An attached magazine would mechanically replace a fired bolt with another when the shooter rearmed the weapon.
