By 1191, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was a Master Assassin, but he was demoted to the rank of novice following a mission in which he failed to obtain the Apple of Eden.
The failure of the mission led to the death of Kadar, and the loss of Maliks’ arm. When Altair later encountered Malik during another contract, he was respectful, despite the urge to argue. This shows development from Altair being arrogant to being considerate and level headed. More detail can be found in “Assassins Creed:The Secret Crusade”.
