"Do you have any idea what they will do to me?"
Al-Mutawakkil succeeded his brother to become the tenth Abbasid Caliph. He was then forced to fend off multiple threats to his position, both from the outside and within. Despite his high seat, there were forces at work in the Caliphate that he was eager to please—and more fearful still to offen.
