Croton was a city in Italy around 6th century BCE. Pythagoras and his protege, Kyros of Zarax, spent a few years of their lives in Croton, where they thrived because of Pythagoras' knowledge.
History

A few years after Pythagoras' discovery of the tetractys, he, Kyros and several servants traveled to Croton, where they were welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd. Pythagoras and Kyros thrived during their stay in the city, and Pythagoras set up his own academy, passing his teachings on to young and promising scholars.
However, after having lived in the city for a while, tension started to rise as people didn't agree with Pythagoras' teachings any more. Some were simply jealous, while others disagreed with Pythagoras' ideas and ideals. After an attempt was made on Pythagoras' life, he and Kyros left the city through a hidden passage in the house of one of his students, Milo.
