Pope Clement V (c. 1264 – 20 April 1314), born Raymond Bertrand de Got, was a French prelate and later Pope from 1305 until his death.
A pawn of the Assassins and Philip IV of France, the pope collaborated with the King to disband the Order of the Knights Templar after they had been conveniently accused of heresy. After a seven years trial, he was present during the burning of Jacques de Molay in 1314. His papacy was heavily controlled by the French crown, as evidenced by the moving of the Holy See in France, from Rome to Avignon, where seven popes reigned until the Holy See returned to Rome in 1377.
