Charleston, previously known as Charles-Towne, is the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina. At some point, the pirate Edward Kenway inflitrated the location for certain goods. Charles-Towne was founded in 1670 west of the Ashley River, but was moved in 1680 to the current Charleston peninsula situated between the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. By 1718 when the two visited, Charles-Towne was entirely walled in. South Carolina, thanks to the plantations in Charles-Towne and maritime trade in the city, was quickly becoming one of the wealthiest colonies in British America. This massive amount of trade constantly attracted pirates like Thatch and Edward, but no Royal Navy ships were dispatched there by the King until the early 1720s. The local militia did most of the pirate hunting, and imprisoned pirates like Stede Bonnet in the town's Guardhouse. Colonel William Rhett captured Bonnet with his militiamen from Charles-Towne. In the modern day, Charles-Towne is known as Charleston, South Carolina.
