Catherine II Alexeievna (Russian: Екатерина II Алексеевна; 1729 – 1796), commonly known as Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russian Empire from 1762 until her death. She was Russia's longest-ruling female leader, and the country was revitalized during her reign, becoming recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.

They exploited his unpopularity, secured the support of key military and government figures, and pressured Peter into abdicating the throne. On 9 July, Catherine the Great was declared Empress of Russia.[1] Following the coup d'état her husband was assassinated, possibly by the Assassin Brotherhood.[2]
