The Carolingian Pike was a spear used in the 9th century by warriors in shield walls.

-* This type of spear was popular during the 9th century, used by the [[Franks]], [[Anglo-Saxons]], and especially by the [[Vikings]].  The wings on the spearhead were used to hook enemy [[Shield|shields]] and move them out of the way in order to deliver a killing blow.  They were also used by European nobility as [[Wild boar|boar]]-hunting spears, as the wings also stop the boar from running up the entire shaft of the spear when it was stabbed.
