Brunhild (Old Norse: Brynhildr), sometimes referenced as Sigrdrífa[1], was a Valkyrie in Norse mythology.
Biography
When Sigurd deceived Brunhild into marrying the Burgundian king Gunther, she cursed him. At first she seemed to be judged solely on this, until a witness came forth who claimed she was coerced. Thus Tyr pleaded to Havi for a fair trial.[1]
Legacy and influence
In December 872, the Viking blacksmith Gunnar lamented about his lackluster love life, thinking he would never find his Brunhild.[2]
Brunhild had a totem named after her in the popular dice game Orlog, played during the 9th century. The piece "Brunhild's Fury" would multiply axe die for player. An Anglo-Saxon man in Northwic, East Anglia possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[3]
