The Book was used in Bombastus' study to learn how to create gold from other elements. It has blank pages but fills people's minds with ideas when read.
According to Bombastus, seeing too much of the book at a time may cause insanity; After having looked at The Book, Bombastus' apprentice Johan apparently went mad. When Giovanni Borgia looked at it however, he gained the knowledge of crafting the Philosopher's Stone.
It can also be assumed another piece of eden, since it give gives on the knowledge ( the sixth sense)
and allows one to see the future much like the P.o.E posessed bt altiair
