The Ceremony at Bois Caïman, 1791

Bois Caïman (Haitian Creole: Bwa Kayiman, lit. 'Caiman Forest')[note 1] was a place in Haiti known as the site of the first major meeting for what would become the Haitian Revolution.[1]

History

In August 1791, Haitian Assassin Dutty Boukman led a Vodou ceremony at Bois Caïman and called for a major rebellion, as the first part of a plan devised by Eseosa, taking some inspiration from François Mackandal. Boukman prophesized that fellow Assassins Jean-François Papillon, Georges Biassou, and Jeannot Bullet would be the leaders of a resistance movement that would free the enslaved people of Saint-Domingue. Following the meeting, violence erupted and numerous cane fields and sugar refineries on the Plaine du Nord were burnt down.[2]
