The pirate hunter Robert Maynard was a British Royal Navy officer who made his name in the Indies at the turn of the 18th century.
Born in Dartford, Kent on 19 September 1684, Maynard spend an unremarkable childhood before joining the English Navy. He was made a lieutenant in 1707 at the age of 23, and was later tasked with hunting down and capturing the pirate Edward Thatch, known as "Blackbeard".
For months Maynard dogged Blackbeard across the West Indies, and finally lured him into attacking his ship off the coast of North Carolina. After allowing him to board his ship, Maynard struck Blackbeard down.
