The Real or Reale (R), also known as the Spanish real, was a unit of currency minted and used in Spain and its colonies from the 14th until the 19th century. It shares its name with the otherwise unrelated modern Brazilian currency "Real" (R$), which has been the country's official currency[1] since 1994.[2]

History

During the Reconquista in the 15th century, the real was Spain's main currency.[3] The real later made its way to the New World following the Spanish Empire's expansion, so that by the Golden Age of Piracy, it was the currency most commonly used throughout the West Indies.[4]

Behind the scenes

Despite the Spanish real being the standardized in-universe currency for the 2013 video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the above page image extracted from its files is actually a Portuguese real minted during the reign of King John V.
