Benedict of Nursia (480 – 547) was an Italian monk, writer, and theologian who is venerated as a saint in various Christian denominations. He was the founder of the Order of Saint Benedict, whose followers were known as Benedictines.
Around 530, Benedict wrote a series of precepts that later came to known as the Rule of Saint Benedict, which established a set of principles which monks were encouraged to follow. One of the principles was the Canonical hours which marks the divisions of the day where prayers should be performed. In the 10th century, various monasteries and cathedrals adopted this principle across southern England.[1]
