Sugar

Sugar is a sweet-tasting carbohydrate, which can be differentiated in terms of being a simple sugar or a compound sugar. Sugar itself can be found from multiple sources, such as sugarcanes, malting grain, sugar beets, and milk, which range themselves into different varieties.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In the Renaissance era, sugar was collected by both the Italian Assassins and Templars in Rome and used to craft smoke bombs, along with gunpowder. Sugar was also a component to brew beer, along with wheat.[2]

During the Golden Age of Piracy, sugar was a major commodity, being used as a trading resource[3][4] and to create byproducts for trade, such as rum.[5] For this reason, many pirates would plunder merchant ships for sugar and then sell it on the market.[6] Sugar plantations became highly profitable, especially in the Caribbean, where Saint-Domingue served as the world's leading sugar producer.[7]

During the early 18th century, the businesswoman Madam Lee controlled Macau's salt and sugar trade, allowing her to earn a fortune and become one of the city's most powerful merchants. In 1725, the British Assassin Edward Kenway infiltrated Lee's main warehouse in Macau to steal salt and sugar,[8] which were used to treat a cholera outbreak in Zhang's village.[9]

In 1793, during the French Revolution, the College of the Four Nations in Paris converted its chapel into a sugar storage for France's privileged citizens.[10]
