Ishikawa Goemon (石川 五右衛門; 1558 – 1594) was a leader of a group of bandits during the Sengoku period. He gained fame for stealing gold and valuables to give to the poor, making him revered as a legendary outlaw hero.[1]

Biography

Little is known of Goemon's origin, except that he was once a shinobi in Iga, training under Momochi Sandayu. After being caught in an accident with Sandayu's mistress, Goemon was exiled from Iga, with stories of his exile spread amongst the rest of the Iga-ikki.[2]

In 1582, while in Iga, the samurai Yasuke came across several Igan ninja speaking of Goemon's disgraceful act when he had supposedly return to Iga. Yasuke would later encounter Goemon himself and received kata training from him.[2]
