In 1508, [[Pope]] [[Leo X]] initiated an architectural competition for the church to be renovated. The competition was won by an architect by the name of [[Sansovino]], but complications caused construction to slowly gind to a halt. Many different people tried to finish the church over the next two centuries, before it was finally completed in 1734.

San Giovanni dei Fiorentini (English: Saint John of the Florentines) was the national church of Florence in Rome.[1]
