There was a whole obsession about pirates too, and see how Black Flag turned out. It involves pirates in its own right, but they steered away from most of the cliches and made a solid game out of it.
Who's to say that Japan or China won't have that same distinction when Ubisoft portrays it in an Assassin's Creed game or other piece of media?
