As they move, so did the assassin, [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni]], who was quietly following them at the rooftops. Giovanni began his ambush by landing directly in front of them. This caused Rodrigo to retreat and leave his men behind to deal with him. Rodrigo's allies was easily dispatched by Giovanni, and one of them was taken away by the assassin to the home of his employer, Lorenzo de Medici for questioning.

Giovanni rushes forward to intercept the assassins. Although he managed to take down some of them, it was clear that he was too late, as the Duke's lifeless body lay flat in front of the altar.

The man who instigated the attack tried to escape, but, one of the bodyguards chased after him, and eventually pinned him down to a wall. Despite Giovanni's pleas to spare him, the guard snapped the man's neck, killing him and then spitting on his corpse. As the guard left, Giovanni searched the man's body, and found Venetian Coins in his bag. With this, he left Milan, and returned to Florence.
