Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi (903 – 986) was an Abbasid astronomer, best known for being the first individual to make a recorded observation of the Andromeda Galaxy.
He was also known for his work Kitāb suwar al-kawākib (English: Treatise on the Fixed Stars), which contained translations of Ptolemy's Almagest and illustrations of stars and constellations known from classical antiquity. His book was widely copied and used for centuries after his time.[1][2]
