The Assassin's Creed film is an upcoming, feature-length motion picture, based on the award-winning series of the same name, being developed by Ubisoft Motion Pictures for a 2014 release.[1]

The plot of the film "revolves around a man who learns his ancestors were trained Assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts."[2]

Development

The terms and conditions surrounding the agreement between Ubisoft and Sony have been described by Hollywood insiders as "unheard of", with Ubisoft getting the final say on budget, principal cast, script, release date and more.[3] One individual even went so far as to say that "The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin’s Creed will never – and I mean never – get made."[4]

The level of control being afforded to Ubisoft has divided critics of both games and films, with many noting that while Hollywood insiders consider Sony's move to have killed the film before it's even begun, gamers consider the move to be beneficial to the franchise's future, as in recent years, game adaptations have tended to be of poor quality.[4]

In support of this, the studio's senior VP of international marketing, Jean de Rivieres, claims that their films will "reflect the brands accurately and consolidate our fan base," with the film also being confirmed to show in 3D.[5]

Michael Fassbender will both produce and star in the film.[2] Critics have speculated that Fassbender will be portraying series-lead, Desmond Miles,[6] though this has neither been confirmed, or denied.[7]
