The Abbey of San Mercuriale (Italian: Abbazia di San Mercuriale) is the main religious building located in the Italian city of Forlì. It is located on the central square, near the Palazzo Comunale.
The tower of the Abbey of San Mercuriale, with its height of 75 meters, is one of the tallest in Italy. The first church on the site was destroyed by fire in 1173. The present structure was built with brick in the Lombard-Romanesque style and took only 7 years.[1][2]
The colonnade to the right of the church is part of the abbey's cloister.[1][2]
History
In 1488, after speaking with one of the monks of the abbey, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze was able to learn the identity of the nine-fingered monk who had stolen the Apple of Eden.[3]
Prior to Lorenzo de' Medici's death, he assigned assassination contracts to Ezio from a pigeon coop situated on the roof behind the abbey's tower.[3]
