Xingtian (刑天; lit. 'Punishing Heaven') is a deity in Chinese mythology who challenged the Yellow Emperor,[1] the legendary forefather of the Chinese people.[2]

According to legend, Xingtian opposed the Yellow Emperor when the latter was ruling the gods. The Yellow Emperor decapitated him as they fought, but this failed to slay him. Instead, Xingtian transformed his nipples into a new pair of eyes and revived himself to continue the struggle, now hell-bent on revenge. Qin-era folklore purported that he was still roaming the ancient grounds where he had fallen in battle, unceasingly shouting for the Yellow Emperor to face him again, only to be forever denied. It was warned that he tended to mistake passersby for enemy combatants and attacked them on sight.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
