Wiltshire (Old English: Wiltunscire) is a county in the South East of England.
History[edit | edit source]
Viking Age[edit | edit source]
Prior to the Battle of Chippenham in 878, Guthrum chose the town of Werham as a safe haven for the Danes, to provide a foothold for an attack on Winchester.[1] Around the same time, Alfred the Great gained control over the fyrd of Wiltunscire, who were overlooking the River Thames and the Icknield Way.[1]
Modern Era[edit | edit source]
Wiltshire was mentioned in a poem in a 1738 almanac published by Benjamin Franklin.[2]
Templar Lord Cardigan became an MP in 1818, representing Marlborough, a small region of Wiltshire. Lord Cardigan became quite unpopular, and was badly assaulted at a rally in 1832.[3]
Appearances[edit | edit source]
