Völund was an Isu, later remembered as the god of forges in Norse mythology.[1] He was also identified as Wayland the Smith.[2]
Biography
In 870, the Viking Geirmund Hel-hide first met Völund after a near-death drowning. There, Geirmund and Völund discussed where Geirmund was as Völund addressed himself as a memory from the "gods". After claiming they were in his forge, Völund gifted Geirmund an arm-band, Hnituðr, which was connected to his ancestors and thus his birthright. Geirmund took the arm-band and thanked Völund before leaving.[3]
Seven years later, Geirmund and his company, the Hel-hides, found themselves marching to Wayland's Smithy after learning of Ubba Ragnarsson's demise. Once there, Geirmund noticed a mound and investigated to see if it was another forge of Völund. After determining it was not, he called out for Völund, who appeared differently than before. This version explained that he did not know Geirmund, as different memories were split among the forges and were not connected to each other. After discussing Hnituðr, Völund stated that the ring given to Geirmund was intended solely for him and no one else. Realizing what must be done, Geirmund bid farewell to Völund once again.[2]
