The Vault is one of the "temples" left by Those Who Have Gone Before, but what exactly is their purpose is still up for speculation. It is possible that they are a storage of knowledge, design to possibly give instructions on how to avoid "the disaster".
It appears that only the combination of different Piece of Eden can open it, and are built to only allow specific people to enter.
