The Uffizi Gallery (Italian: Galleria degli Uffizi) is an art museum adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy. It occupies a building constructed in the mid-to-late 16th century,[1] and turned into a museum by the end of the 18th century, around the same time of the establishment of similar enterprises like the Louvre in Paris and the Vatican Museums in Rome.[2]
One of the largest museums in the world, it holds many collections from the period of the Italian Renaissance.[1] Among the many items comprising its exhibits is the multi-volume diary of noblewoman Maria Auditore da Firenze (née de' Mozzi), highly regarded as an important primary source for life in Florence during the period, being translated by several notable scholars.[3][4]
