The Tōshōdai-ji (唐招提寺, lit. 'the Temple where the Tang Beckons and Lifts') is a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan. It was built in 759[1] in the style of the Tang dynasty by the Chinese monk Jianzhen, hence its name. Its purpose was to safeguard the śarīra he had smuggled out of the continent to keep out of the hands of the Golden Turtles.[2]
