The Tōshōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nara, Japan. It was built in the style of the Tang dynasty, and also called "the Temple where the Tang Beckons and Lifts".[1]

History

The Tōshōdai-ji was founded in 759[2] by the Chinese monk Jianzhen, who sought to erect a temple to safeguard the śarīra he had smuggled out of the continent in order to keep it out of the hands of the Golden Turtles.[1]
