Sir Thomas Gresham (c. 1519 – 1579) was an English merchant and financier who acted on behalf of the royal family, including for queens Mary I and Elizabeth I.[1]

History

Founding the Royal Exchange

In 1570, Gresham founded the Royal Exchange, having been inspired by Belgium's Bourse of Antwerp. Being the main investor, his influence was such that the building featured a grasshopper—the insect on his coat of arms—on the weathervane and a statue of him in the open courtyard.[2]

Legacy

In 1844, the building for the Royal Exchange was rebuilt for the second time after a fire, and Gresham's grasshopper returned to the weathervane, where it has remained since.[2]
