The Thieves were one of the three factions that assisted the Assassin Ezio Auditore during the Renaissance, the other two being the Courtesans and the Mercenaries.

Led by Antonio, their main hideout was located in the commercial district of the Italian city Venice. The guild wasn't just a bunch of robbers; they didn't target innocent citizens, and instead defied the local, corrupted, nobility. In Florence and Rome, the thieves were led by La Volpe.
The Thieves were one of the factions-for-hire in Italy during the Renaissance, alongside courtesans and mercenaries. They were adept free-runners, and possessed a number of guilds in different cities.

Application
Several guilds, including the Venetian guild and Roman guild, were allied to the Assassin Order. As such, they possessed a measure of virtue; refusing to steal from the poor, and fighting to defy the local, corrupt nobility.
The thieves could help Ezio by distracting the guards, and luring them away; however, this ability could be only used once for a single group of thieves. Once he used it they were no longer in his service. On rooftops they fought instead of lured. Engaging in a fight while a group of thieves was following Ezio, automatically prompted them to assist him. He could also hire a second group to help at this point, though only one group would follow him around when the fight was over.

He had to be careful when free running, however, for the thieves could easily fall into water and die (as they couldn't swim). Thus, if he had thieves following him, he avoided jumping across canals from the roof, particularly in Venice. Also, he remembered that thieves could be just as easily be killed by falling while performing normal acrobatics (sometimes they were killed by other thieves if they were in the way).
However, a number of thieves were independent of the Order. The Cento Occhi in particular were allied to the House of Borgia, and sought to counteract the Assassins. Several pickpockets chose to steal freely from Assassins as well.

In Rome, hired thieves acted much as they did in the previous cities. However, once Ezio reached rank 5 in the Thieves Guild Challenges, they began pickpocketing money for Ezio as they followed him through the streets of Rome. In order to aid Ezio, La Volpe based the local Thieves Guild in an inn called La Volpe Addormentata ("The Sleeping Fox"). The inn acted as both a hideout for the thieves, as well as a place where civilians and guards could gamble, though the thieves made sure that the guards never won. At the back of the bar lay La Volpe's office, which contained a board where he listed the top five thieves based on their actions. Ezio later decided to join this competition, and was thus given the Thieves Guild Challenges. There Ezio could talk with La Volpe to obtain several Thief Missions across Rome. Doing these missions helped the thieves to beat their rivals, the Cento Occhi.
Florentine (and later, Roman) thieves were led by La Volpe, Venetian thieves were led by Antonio de Magianis, and the Rome-based Cento Occhi were led by Lanz.

History
Thieves were lightly armed, carrying only a short blade, and wearing very light armor. This allowed them to follow Ezio in many of his acrobatic moves. They only used swords in some quests throughout the games. They did not, however, follow him up very high towers (such as view points) or make far leaps, if they were able to find another route, no matter how lengthy it may be. They were surprisingly effective in combat, easily dodging or blocking enemy blows, and returning them. A group of four thieves could take on eight Medici Guardsmen and suffer very little damage. Their only vulnerability in combat were Brutes and Seekers.
From as early as when a thief helped to save his life by urging him to run from the guards at his family's execution, Ezio Auditore da Firenze both helped, and enlisted aid from thieves on several occasions.

"We are with you, friend, only lead the way."
―A thief's greeting to Ezio.[src]

The Thieves were one of the factions-for-hire in Italy during the Renaissance, alongside courtesans and mercenaries. They were adept free-runners, and possessed a number of guilds in different cities.

Several guilds, including the Venetian guild and Roman guild, were allied to the Assassin Order. As such, they possessed a measure of virtue; refusing to steal from the poor, and fighting to defy the local, corrupt nobility.

However, a number of thieves were independent of the Order. The Cento Occhi in particular were allied to the House of Borgia, and sought to counteract the Assassins. Several pickpockets chose to steal freely from Assassins as well.

Florentine (and later, Roman) thieves were led by La Volpe, Venetian thieves were led by Antonio de Magianis, and the Rome-based Cento Occhi were led by Lanz.

History

From as early as when a thief helped to save his life by urging him to run from the guards at his family's execution, Ezio Auditore da Firenze both helped, and enlisted aid from thieves on several occasions.[1]

Thieves were often the most well-informed factions of the cities, and were thus able to provide Ezio with information on targets and other events in their district. In Florence of 1478, La Volpe made use of one of his thieves to lure Ezio to him, after which he gave him details on how to locate Francesco de' Pazzi.[1]

In 1481, after assisting Rosa, one of the members of the Venetian guild, Ezio allied with the thieves in order to infiltrate the Palazzo della Seta. Together, he and the thieves successfully claimed the building and assassinated Emilio Barbarigo in 1485.[1]

Some time prior to 1499, Paganino, a member of the Venetian guild, betrayed his allies and became a spy for the Templars; passing them vital information on the Assassin Order, and their base in Monteriggioni. At the opening of the new year in 1500, his actions eventually led to the Fall of Monteriggioni.[2]

Upon traveling to Rome, Ezio allied his newly-founded Assassins guild with La Volpe's thieves. After aiding them in establishing their headquarters in La Volpe Addormentata, he learned of their close rivalry with the Cento Occhi thieves.[2]

In contrast to the Assassin-allied thieves, the Cento Occhi stole from the poor, and terrorized the civilians of Rome. At La Volpe's request, Ezio aided in repressing them, fighting in brawls alongside La Volpe's thieves, sullying the Cento Occhi's reputation with the Borgia, and killing the guild's leaders.[2]

Characteristics

Though he usually worked alongside the guilds to suppress Templar-control of a city, Ezio also hired thieves on the streets, offering them money in return for assistance. Unlike the other hired factions, they could easily follow the Assassin along rooftops.[1][2]

The thieves could help Ezio by distracting any soldiers guarding high-profile locations, such as Banks or other restricted areas. They often did so by attacking or taunting the men, and subsequently luring them away. Should Ezio engage in a fight as they followed him, they would always help him defeat his enemies as well.[1]

After he had competed alongside them in several challenges, the thieves of Rome began to further assist Ezio by pickpocketing money for him whenever he hired them.[2]

Combat

Thieves were lightly armed, carrying only a dagger (or a sword on rare occasions) and wearing very light armor. This allowed them to follow Ezio in many of his acrobatic moves, though did not offer much protection in combat.[1]

They resorted to speed and agility in combat, dodging and countering enemy blows much like Agile guards. As such, they were usually only vulnerable to well-protected guards, such as Brutes and Seekers.[1]
