A swivel gun installed on the Jackdaw

The swivel gun was a naval artillery cannon that was developed in the 14th century. Known for its high rate of fire, the swivel gun was later used worldwide starting from the 16th century until the late 20th century.[1]

History

By the 16th century, larger naval vessels installed swivel guns and were used either to sink smaller ships like gunboats or attack the weakpoints on damaged ships during naval warfare.[2][3][4]

During the Golden Age of Piracy, the pirate captain and Assassin Edward Kenway installed and upgraded his golden swivel guns aboard his ship, the Jackdaw.[3] During the American Revolutionary Wars, American Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, grandson of Edward Kenway, repaired the Aquila, an Assassin brig, and used its armaments, such as its swivel gun, to accomplish many privateer contracts[2] and to stop the Colonial Templar Nicholas Biddle's influence over the eastern coast.[5]
