Stephen Bennings was a British private who fought in World War I.

On July 1916, Bennings wrote to Father Spencer, a priest in his hometown, wanting to unburden himself about the horrors he'd witnessed during the Battle of the Somme, including the noise and sliding of his boots on blood and being covered by a heavy corpse for hours. Bennings returned home weeks after the end of the battle and was diagnosed with shell shock.[1]

Bennings' letter ended up in London, where it was recovered by the British Assassin Lydia Frye.[2]
