The Arkalochori Cave is a cave in Octopus Bay in Messara, Greece.
During the Peloponnesian War, the bandits who had made the cave their base stole a ceremonial axe from the temple of Poseidon in Heraklion. Terrified, a priestess of the temple asked the Spartan misthios Kassandra to retrieve the axe from the bandits, telling her about the cave. Kassandra explored the place, killing the leader of the bandits, claiming their valuables and finding the axe.[1]
Trivia
- The name of this cave is a reference to Arkalochori, a town on Krete, while the cave itself is apparently meant to be the Minoan sacred cave near the town.
