The Sicilian Expedition (415 BCE–413 BCE) was an Athenian attempt to conquer Sicily during the Peloponnesian War.
The massive expeditionary force was deployed at great expense on the proposal of the statesman Alkibiades, but it turned out to be a strategic blunder. The entire force was annihilated upon their arrival in Sicily, a defeat so catastrophic that it signalled the beginning of the end of Athens' power.[1]
