Shōkoku-ji (相国寺) is a Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto, founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu[1] in 1382.[2] A great patron of the arts, Yoshimitsu established Shōkoku-ji to serve as a school for painting, and the temple produced many great artists, including Sesshū Tōyō, who is considered the greatest ink painting artist of Japan.[1]
