Shimazu Takahisa (島津 貴久, 1514 – 1571) was a Japanese daimyō[1] in Kagoshima,[2] as well as the 15th leader of the Shimazu clan.[1] Takahisa was the first host of the Templar Francis Xavier's Jesuit mission to Japan, welcoming the missionary[2] in 1549[1] and giving them permission to preach Christianity in his domains, hoping this would lead to more trade with the Portuguese. After a year, with no Portuguese ships having arrived[2] and facing pressure from local Buddhists,[1] he prohibited Christianity and expelled Xavier.[2]
