Roman mythology is the collective body of work regarding the myths of Roman civilization as represented in their art. Roman mythology is known for drawing on the mythology of the Italic peoples, such as the Etruscans, as well as from Greek mythology. This syncretism meant that many of their mythological figures would be identified with those of the ancient Greeks and reinterpreted myths about Greek deities under the names of their Roman counterparts, as was the case with Athena and Minerva, for example.[1]
Founding of Rome
Among the many myths that surround Roman civilization, one of the best-known is the story of twins Romulus and Remus. Ordered to be killed by their great-uncle Amulius, the twins were abandoned on the bank of the river Tiber to die but were saved by the god Tiberinus.[2] They were later raised by a she-wolf in a cave known as Lupercal located at the Palatine Hill.[3][4][5] As young adults, the twins set out to build a city of their own but disagreed about the hill upon which to build. After a fight, Remus was killed and Romulus then went on to found the city of Rome, reigning for many years as its first king.[2]
By the early 16th century, Romulus was worshipped by a cult known as the Followers of Romulus, who believed that Romulus was part wolf and part man.[6][7]
