- ―Auguste Tavernier calling out to the long-deceased Damiens, 1789.[src]
Robert-François Damiens (9 January 1715 – 28 March 1757) was a French domestic servant who attempted to assassinate Louis XV of France in 1757.
Damiens stabbed Louis with a knife, but the King survived. Damiens was immediately arrested and underwent brutal torture before being violently executed.
His supposed accomplice, Auguste Tavernier, was eventually imprisoned in the Bastille.
