Richard Nicolls (1624 – 1672) was an English colonel in the Royal Navy and the first governor of the Province of New York.
In 1664, the Dutch city of New Amsterdam peacefully surrendered to Colonel Nicolls and his forces, later being renamed New York City by the English.[1]
