A regular soldier

A regular is any basic footsoldier that comprises the bulk of a military. While unspecialized troops have commonly been referred to as such, other names like militia during the Renaissance and grunts in the Ming dynasty have also been used.[1][2][3]

During the American Revolution, British Regulars were derisively referred to as "Redcoats" or "Lobsterbacks" by the Patriots.[4]
