Raven is a species of birds belonging to the genus Corvus. Recognizable as relatively large black birds, ravens inhabit much of the Northern Hemisphere.

History

During the 9th century, a raven named Sýnin accompanied the Viking Eivor on their journeys throughout the British Isles.[1]

In the 19th century, ravens were a common sight in London.[2][3]

Cultural significance

As a black bird, raven has been used throughout human history to highlight the darkness of a person's hair.[4][5][6][7]

Mythology

In Greek mythology, a place called Raven's Rock was where Odysseus planned the demise of his wife Penelope's suitors.[8] Even by the time of the Peloponnesian War, the place was home to a sizable flock of ravens.[9]

In Norse mythology, Odin was said to have two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, who kept him informed of all the goings-on in the worlds.[10]
