The Prosphorion and Neorion, the commercial port and the naval dockyard of ancient Byzantium (Constantinople), were on the north coast of the city, and in Ottoman times all important shipping, apart from a small fleet of war galleys, used harbors in the Golden Horn.

History

By the early 5th century, there were two adjacent enclosed harbours on the Golden Horn (Prosphorion and Neorion) and two others were on the Sea of Marmara (Julian and Theodosius).
