We do this together or not at all.

It has been proposed that this page be merged with Pirate hunter, under the article: Privateers. Discussion to this effect can be held on the former article's talk page.

A privateer is a private individual commissioned by governments to attack enemy ships in times of war.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the Royal Navy commissioned privateers such as Edward Thatch, Benjamin Hornigold, and Edward Kenway, but when the war ended, privateers became unnecessary, leading many of them to resort to piracy as an easier way to make a living. During the French and Indian War, Shay Cormac could have been referred to as a privateer working with the French during his years as an Assassin and later with the British when he became a Templar. Later during the American Revolution, the Assassin Connor aided the Continental Navy as a privateer against the Royal Navy aboard the Aquila, ensuring them victory at the Battle of Chesapeake.
