Maharana Pratap Singh (1540 – 1597) was a Hindu Rajput ruler of Mewar from 1572 to his death.

Biography

By 1576, Mewar was one of the only areas in the region of Rajasthan not under the rule of Akbar's Mughal Empire. In June of that year, the forces of Pratap Singh and Akbar fought at the Battle of Gogunda, also known as Battle of Haldighati. While Pratap Singh's forces were able to mount a massive ambush on their opponents, the Mughals won the battle.[1]

After his defeat at Gogunda, Pratap Singh continued his resistance from the Aravalli hills, refusing to recognize Mughal rule until years after.[1]
